Chronophotomaton

2010-2011

This installation presents the process of capturing and rating the movement developed by Étienne-Jules Marey. This is an update of his method of writing movement which is thus carried out with the means of the 21st century. The spectators are invited to take their turn to climb onto the installation and to move along the black and white ruler in the direction of the two touch screens hanging at the other end of the course. If the route is correctly completed, it is recorded by a camera placed on the ground. The spectator will then see his route on the left touch screen archived in the image tower which keeps all the routes in memory and gives everyone the opportunity to consult them.

The screen on the right will offer a direct visualisation of the journey completed, to play with it by increasing or decreasing the number of images. The spectator then has the opportunity to print his route.

By allowing the spectator to thus play with a device in which his body and his gestures unfold animations in real time, the real and virtual hybrid Chronophotomaton to account for the phenomenon of the synthesis of movement.
